ODBC DSN (Windows Only)

You are here:
Overview

In computing, Open Database Connectivity (ODBC) is a standard application programming interface (API) for accessing database management systems (DBMS). The designers of ODBC aimed to make it independent of database systems and operating systems. An application written using ODBC can be ported to other platforms, both on the client and server side, with few changes to the data access code. Extrata downloads your data using the ODBC DSN API.

Skill Level:  ODBC DSN API Intermediate Classification

This Service only works on Windows computers.

ODBC
Caveats & Tips
  • The ODBC service is not certified to work with Microsoft Access databases
  • Mac users need to be sure that they’ve preinstalled UnixODBC
  • Some (PG and MSSQL) connections require user name and password even when stored in the DSN
Steps to Configure the ODBC DSN API Service Connector
Steps to Set-up the Source
  1. Click on the “Services” menu link in the left pane.
  2. Click on the “+” next to the Microsoft SQL Server Service.
  3. Enter the Source Name.
  4. Enter the optional Source Description.  Text in the description is useful during search requests.
  5. The Service should already default to “ODBC DSN Connection (Windows Only)”.
  6. Enter the DSN name.
  7. If required, enter the User Name and Password for the user that has credentials to connect to the database.
  8. Click Save to create the new source.
Steps to Set-up the Task
  1. Click on the “Projects” menu link in the left pane.
  2. If there are no projects listed, create a new project, otherwise go to step 3.
  3. Click on the project name that will contain the task. Click the “Add Task” button.
  4. Enter the Task Name.
  5. Enter the optional Task Description.  Text in the description is useful during search requests.
  6. The Project is where the task will be saved and it will default to the Project name selected from the project list.  If you need to change the project, select the new project from the drop down list.
  7. The Source will default to the source name that is set as the default for the project.  If you need to change the source, select the new source from the drop down list.
  8. Enter the SQL Statement for the query. Example:
    SELECT * FROM Customers;
  9. Enter the path or browse to the Save To Folder. The Save To Folder location defaults to the same location you set in your project, but you can also override it.
  10. Enter the file name for the output file.
  11. Select the File Type from the drop down list.  When saved, the file name will end with the selected file type.
  12. Click Save to create the new Task.
Running the Task
  1. Click on the “Projects” menu link in the left pane.
  2. Select the Project that contains the task.
  3. In the Tasks list, click the Run ODBC DSN API Task run icon for the task you would like to run.  The data will be downloaded from your service using the API and saved to the output file location. During the run, a Run Task dialog window will open with a task log of the run.  You can use this log to troubleshoot any run-time issues.
